After many discussions and it was decided that if students in schools could be impacted at a younger age about topics such as bullying, body image, self-esteem, being a good friend and being accountable, they may navigate the tough choices that come their way in middle school with more ease and confidence.
The founding members of the Esteem Team spent time choosing personal stories of challenges and how they overcame them. They shared stories of failures and frustration. Leaders of GBAAS brought in facilitators and provided education for the Esteem Team members on public speaking, leading a group, relating to younger children and managing large workshops. The group learned to budget and then after months of preparation, submitted their proposal for the grant.
Following My Heart
Presentations were and are strategically created to bring youth together, to look past the common social challenges faced in school years. Wrapping these issues in the enthusiasm and excitement of bellydance makes them very attractive to young students. These inspiring middle and high school students create these sessions to have the greatest impact on grade 5-7 students.
It's incredible to see the effect youth have on youth.
Providing the foundation for the Esteem Team youth to create positive change in others will always be at the forefront of my days. Youth are our most powerful influence over youth when you let them follow their hearts as well.
Dreams That Thrive
Over the years, Get Bent has been fortunate enough to watch thousands of elementary and middle school students, from across the province, be impacted by the Esteem Team presentations.
With each group spanning a 2-4 year period, Get Bent is proud to have the 5th generation of Esteem Team members presenting throughout BC schools.
While each year’s group make the presentation their own to give, the connection they share, the community they build and confidence they inspire remain strong and forever inspiring.
