Our exploration with our Passion Project has unofficially begun in the classroom. I use the term unofficial as the students in our classroom have yet to learn that the very learning we are doing at this time will apply directly to our passion project.
For the past week, I have been working with my class on our collective ability to identify questions and wonders branching off a series of images. Some are sources from sites such as National Geographic and others are pulled from picture books. While our wonders and curiosities may not be answered, this is often the place people launch from on their exploration to help out on a local or global community level: Why is their world hunger when we have more than enough food to feed everyone in the world? How can water be more accessible for individuals in developing countries? Why do women have less opportunities to receive a formal education?
By practicing our wonders in a safe and supportive environment while also taking appropriate risks to share them, I hope to create a space where the students in my class dare to wonder on an even deeper level. Combining things they are truly passionate about with some viable solutions to problems/challenges they see in our world is an empowering and brave act of courage. Ashley Aoki is a Grade 4/5 Teacher in the Okanagan Valley. She considers herself to be a teacher/humanitarian. Ashley is currently working alongside a local businessman/ humanitarian Nikos Theodosakis to inspire her Grade 4/5 students to pursue something they are passionate about in the service of others.
